Bernard Silberman has written extensively on Japanese government and has recently compared state-building in 19th century Japan and Europe in Cages of Reason: The Rise of the Rational State in France, Japan, the United States, and Great Britain. He is also interested more generally in bureaucracies and organizational politics. Other books by Silberman include Ministers of Modernization and Japan in Crisis: Essays on Taisho Democracy (co-editor with H.D. Harootunian). He is Director of the Workshop on East Asia.
