Associate Professor Duncan Snidal is currently studying the role of international institutions in promoting cooperation through explaining why they have design features such as centralization, legalization or particular membership rules. In earlier work, he has examined how the distribution of capability and interests affect outcomes, as well as conceptual issues regarding international institutions. Some of his recent publications include "Why States Act through Formal International Organizations" in Journal of Conflict Resolution (1998), "Political Economy and International Institutions" in International Review of Law and Economics (1996), "The Politics of Scope: Endogenous Actors, Heterogeneity and Institutions," in Journal of Theoretical Politics (1994), and "Relative Gains and the Pattern of International Cooperation" in American Political Science Review (1991). He is a Director of the PIPES Workshop.

In addition to his scholarship, Snidal has won a University prize for his graduate teaching. Snidal teaches political economy approaches to public policy in addition to courses on international politics and cooperation.
