Tianna Paschel is in residence as a postdoctoral fellow, and will begin as Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Political Science in July 2012. Her research interests lie in the fields of race and ethnicity, politics, development and globalization. Tianna recently completed her Ph.D. in the Sociology Department at the University of California at Berkeley where she completed a dissertation titled States, Movements and the New Politics of Blackness in Colombia and Brazil. It examines the role that black social movements have played in the recent shift from colorblind state discourses to the adoption of ethno-racial policies in Colombia and Brazil in the 1990s and draws on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork. Her published articles can be found in various edited volumes as well as the American Journal of Sociology, the Dubois Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and Souls: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society. Tianna is the recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright, Mellon and Ford foundations and is currently working on her book manuscript as well as a number of smaller projects that explore the intersection of racial identity, state policies and transnationalism.
