The Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS) enrolls approximately 300 students into our one-year program each year. This year we welcomed students from 27 countries and from a wide variety of previous academic programs, including in the social sciences, humanities, and STEM fields. We welcome students from all backgrounds into our program.

Social Science Disciplines
Students receive training in anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, and/or sociology from world-class researchers at UChicago.

Application Requirements

Applications are submitted through the Division of the Social Sciences. Required documents include: 

  • Unofficial transcripts
  • Candidate statement
  • Writing sample
  • Resume/CV
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Short answer essay
  • TOEFL/IELTS scores (if required)
  • GRE scores (if required by intended area of study)
  • Application fee
