Diversity and Inclusion
In scholarly work, and especially in the Social Sciences, diversity drives rigorous inquiry and excellence in research and pedagogy. The University of Chicago's commitment to the open expression and discussion of ideas requires an environment in which diverse perspectives, experiences, and groups of individuals inform and stimulate intellectual exchange. From its founding the University has welcomed scholars of diverse races, religions, and backgrounds. It is essential to sustain a culture that encourages openness to and respect for diverse perspectives in our community. Historical legacies of inequality within and exclusion from the academy create challenges to achieving this goal. For this reason, a commitment to diversity and inclusion is central to the work of the Division, with the aim supporting diversity among faculty, students and staff, and a commitment to understanding human and social phenomena in all their myriad forms.
